How do physicists detect particles that are far too small to see?

In this course, you will build and operate your own particle detector and use it to observe particles arriving from outer space. Along the way, you will learn how modern particle physics experiments work and how scientists study the invisible world of elementary particles.

Together, we will explore questions such as:
🌌 What are cosmic rays?
☢️ How can invisible particles be detected?
⚛️ What are elementary particles?
🔬 How do modern particle detectors work?

A central part of the course is the construction of a real particle detector. You will learn how to assemble and test the detector, take your own measurements, and analyze the collected data.

Topics include:
☁️ Cloud chambers and visible particle tracks
🌌 Cosmic rays from outer space
⚡ Detector electronics and sensors
🔧 Building a particle detector
📊 Data acquisition and analysis
🔬 Designing and carrying out your own measurements

No prior knowledge of particle physics is required. Curiosity and enthusiasm for science are all you need.

Prerequisite: Interest in physics and confident use of computers/laptops.

The course takes place on five Wednesdays from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. You register for all dates.
